Club Dinner and Awards

The rugby season finally drew to a close last Friday night as over a hundred guests attended the Annual Dinner and Presentations at the Rugby Club. The evening started with the Players entering en masse to their tables to great applause from the guests following the Club's promotion. With Club Secretary Rob Price as MC,Chairman John Griffiths was introduced, welcoming main guests ex-Welsh international and celebrity Rhys Williams and current Welsh international and lion-tamer Scott Baldwin (to loud lion-like roars from the crowd).Andy Tucker and his crew then provided,as always, an excellent meal of pate, roast beef, cheese and biscuits and coffee.

Next Rhys started by congratulating the 1sts and spoke about the values of roots rugby in Wales. He then introduced Scott who started by describing the 'Lion Incident' when he was bitten on the hand by a captive lion in South Africa while on tour with the Osprey's in September 2017.A doctor initially treated the wound but Scott ended up in hospital and in a worst case scenario could have lost his hand. One of the pluses was he flew home Business Class. Then followed an excellent question and answer session with Rhys asking Scott questions that had been submitted by guests, and Scott giving some thoughtful answers to serious questions including the relevance of academies, the Wales summer tour and next years World Cup - one of our best guests for many years. Many thanks Rhys and Scott.Yet again there was a superb speech from Captain Richie who mentioned just about everyone at the club and highlighting the importance of the Youth (with many now representing the 1sts) and coaches Leigh and Dan's 3 Year plan.Leigh then thanked our sponsors Colin Boxall (representing C.S.Boxall Ltd),Dan Jones (HRT) and Gerwyn Jones ( Molson Coors) for their continued valuable support. He also mentioned how tough the first year of the plan was with not enough players but through it all highlighted the captaincy of Huw Lougher - a credit to the club. There was praise for co-coach Dan Williams who was the glue through the years and had the vision to see the plan come to fruition.Special mention was made the front row of Jon Bater,Craig Boxall and Dani John whose performances underpinned many of the season's victories and Physio Kristian Rue who was invaluable throughout.Of course, none of this would have been possible without an outstanding squad of players and so to the awards.
