Draw at home against Abercynon

It was a tight encounter at the Athletic field last Saturday as Cowbridge hosted Abercynon. Both sides showed their attacking intent early on, Cowbridge winning good set piece ball and utilising the backs where possible and the visitors tending to look for territory, before attacking through their pack. However, strong defensive efforts meant that neither side could maintain possession for many phases and moves invariably came to nothing.

Abercynon pressure saw Cowbridge infringe a few times but the visitors could not convert their penalties and the game remained scoreless at half time.

The 2nd half saw the game open up a little as both teams used their benches. It was Cowbridge who struck 1st on 45 mins when a lose kick was gathered by centre Will Rees- Hole who chipped through. Wing Will Williams outpaced the defence and deftly steered the ball over the line for a try on 45 mins, converted from the touchline by centre Tom Hannah.

The lead was short lived though as Abercynon struck back on 52 mins from a good driving line out, which was also converted to tie the scores. Cowbridge created some further chances but sadly could not take them. A break by Tom James from a scrum on the half way was taken on by the forwards to within 5metres, only to lose possession. Shortly after, more pressure won a penalty for Cowbridge but the kick went wide, before another promising break by James also came to nothing.

Abercynon had a couple of opportunities themselves but a determined home defence kept them at bay and the game ended in a draw, which overall was probably a fair result.

Please note dog mess on the pitch resulted in the referee stopping the game several weeks ago. Please ensure this doesn't happen again on what is a private area used by all age groups
