Cowbridge Hang On for Vital Victory

On a perfect day for running rugby Cowbridge took on Tylorstown at the Athletic Ground last Saturday. With both teams still in the race for promotion the visitors were first on the scoreboard with a penalty after just three minutes.A great steal by Cowbridge from the kick off and a drive into the 22 led to a series of penalties - a feature throughout the game - and from an ensuing lineout,a great take and drive by captain Ross Gibbon led to a fine try.For a long period the game was punctuated by penalties and it was from a quick tap that flying wing Rhydian Williams sprinted over, followed by an excellent conversion by full back Zac Summerhayes. With seemingly minutes to go to half time Cowbridge were down to fourteen with a yellow card for a no-arms tackle.Another series of penalties, this time to Tylorstown, put the pressure onto Cowbridge and just before the half time whistle (a fifty minute half!) their left wing sprinted over for a converted try

Half Time Cowbridge 12 Tylorstown 10

Cowbridge started the second half brightly with a sharp break by scrum-half Hywel Williams and a few penalties took play up to the 22.However following a lost lineout Tylorstown were soon in the Cowbridge 22 and from a lineout drove over for their second try to take the lead, but not for long.Rhydian almost broke away for a try but a great rip by James from James Holder following a Tylorstown scrum led to a Cowbridge penalty into touch.A charge from the lineout resulted in another penalty and the sharp thinking Gibbon took a quick tap to crash over for his second try.And that was the last score of the game although there were hearts in mouths for the Cowbridge faithful as with minutes to go Tylorstown missed two kickable penalties.

Despite the number of penalties this was a very open game with both sides running at every opportunity and Cowbridge can feel they should have had a bonus point try but the ref. didn't agree. The situation at the top end of the table gets more complicated every weekend.Fairwater lost on Saturday but Pontyclun and Treharris won.It could all come down to bonus points.

This Saturday we travel to Tylorstown which will be a tough one again then it's Pentyrch away on the 13th followed by two home games,Cefn Coed on the 20th and Clwb Rygbi on the 27th.A second game against Pentyrch is still to be arranged
