Away Victory at Pentyrch

Cowbridge played Pentyrch last Saturday under blue skies but with a definite nip in the air and produced another high scoring win.

In the opening minutes outside half Gareth Williams-Davies put a penalty deep into Pentyrch's  22m .  From the line out Reuben Tucker at No 8 drove forward , it was taken on by second row Sam Richards who drove over the line . Richards then added the extras with a clever low kick into the wind . 10 minutes later after a period of Pentyrch pressure Tucker drove out of Cowbridge 22 and then onto centre Ash Thomas who made another 15 metres but then Pentyrch got the ball and kicked on, their inside centre got hold of it and broke clear a try seemed on the cards but centre and captain Huw Lougher brought him down from behind with a superb tackle.  A counter attack involving Tucker , hooker Craig Boxall and second row James Bennett took play into the Pentyrch 22m but Bennett was injured and came to the side lines.  Aaron Bowman took over . Pentrych were posting warnings of their own , only the final pass letting them down.  Josh Thomas at full back produced a piece of magic standing his player up and then beating him and another but the final pass didn't match what went before . On 30 mins another worrying injury saw Tucker leave the field and Ryan Hall race on. Williams - Davies was orchestrating attacks and Ash Thomas was breaking through almost at will but no end product until with just 4 minutes to half time after runs involving wing Adam Dix, Hall , Boxall and Williams -Davies , Richards got over for his second try and half time came with a score of 0 -12.

Early in the second half only superb work in countering Pentyrch's drive by the pack , most prominently Dan Holder and prop George Thomas , prevented a score. 3 minutes later Pentyrch's were nearly clear again through their No 8.  Then a heavy tackle in the midfield by Hall saw the ball run loose Dix got onto it and then out to William'-Davies to score under the posts Richards added the extras. Dix left the field and Zac Summerhayes came on. Pentyrch scored next with good work initially by the outside half on to their wing  for a converted try . But then things started to go all Cowbridge way with Rhydian Williams scooping up a stray pass and going under the posts that Josh Thomas converted  . More problems as Richards left the field with a knock and Dai Breed took over. Another Hall tackle dislodged the ball ,  Ash Thomas kicked on and Summerhayes gathered it to dab down . Ash Thomas made yet another break , kicked ahead the ball bounced up for Rhydian to get his second try which Josh converted . Rhydian then came off and Will Williams entered the fray and minutes later he was on the score board after a kick ahead by Summerhayes and then a pass inside to Williams to run in form 30 metres . Josh , who had fielded the ball securely from full back through the game added the final points . Full time 7- 45

Pentyrch were better than that score line but perhaps lacked some of the confidence that Cowbridge showed . Points went begging on both sides but whilst there were any number of good performances, in the loose Dan Holder, Tom Evans and George Thomas were exceptional and behind Ash Thomas caused any number of problems to the opposition.

We are indebted to Pentyrch for a fine welcome both before and after the match .

Back at the Clubhouse it was great to see Barry RFC players and committee buoyed by a fine away win at Heol y Cyw and now in with a good chance of securing promotion to Division 1 East Central

On the Bank Holiday weekend family and friends of Tom Clarke will gather and raise a glass or two . It seems hard to believe that 5 years have passed .

Finally the players have done the town proud and given themselves a shot at second place  , but  there are 3 games to go and each presents a different obstacle . We know what Pentyrch can do on the right day, Clwb Rygy had a good result on Saturday and Cefn Coed are a proud club. Support has been fantastic and we hope that will continue to push the boys over the line. This Saturday we take on Cefn , on Wednesday evening 24th April we entertain Pentyrch again and on 27th our last game is Clyb Rygbi  , all are home fixtures .

Many thanks   RV/RK
