Cowbridge gain BP over Treherbert

Last Saturday was one of the great days at the club as the 1st XV secured a fantastic win against second placed Treherbert by 33-8. It was the more special because the boys lost to the same team on a cold winter's night in November . The desire to even the score started in the week and there was a steely determination to show what they were really about .

Within the opening minutes a high kick from scrum half Hywel Williams swirled in the wind so that the Treherbert wing misfielded it,  pacy wing Tommy Reed was up quickly to gather the ball and race up field before passing inside to second row Ross Gibbon , himself showing great pace , to just get to the line.  Full back Ben Wright had the only blot on his kicking as the kick went to the left of the posts in the wind. Reed made another great run down the left 5 minutes later , the ball was recycled and outsides half Tom James with a beautiful missed pass found centre Ash Thomas to glide between defenders to score . Wright put over the tricky conversion.

15 minutes in from a clearing kick Wright counter attacked taking a line in field and then a lovely pass to silky centre Thomas saw Ash bisect defenders covering across to score his second try. Wright secured the extras with another fine conversion. Treherbert got their first points with a penalty at the mid point of the half. With ten minutes to go Cowbridge got the all important bonus point try with a another relieving kick by Treherbert's scrum half fielded by wing Will Williams , he passed inside to Wright who went on a mazy run through defenders and then fed the ball to No 8 Jamie Bennett who took play to 5 metres out and then the recycled ball was dabbed down by tight head prop Jon Bater , a reward for his efforts. Wright added the extras.

Treherbert launched the first real attack as late as the 32nd minute but great defence kept them out led up front  by flanker Joe Davies and hooker Craig Boxall, Boxall was also flawless in his lineout throwing where Gibbon and Davies secured  plenty of clean ball.

Cowbridge got their fifth with a drive by inspirational captain Richie Howson , the recycled ball was deftly kicked to the corner by centre Alex Guard and Williams, despite his years,  beat the defender to the touchline. Wright added a superb conversion from the touchline. Cowbridge finished on the attack with another great run from Gibbon. Half time an almost unbelievable 33-3.   The scrum that had an initial wobble against much heavier opponents held firm and to those mentioned above mention should be made of Brad Langenhoeven on the loose head and Jack Anderson , partner in the second row to Ross Gibbon

Into the second half and 15 minutes in a contretemps on the touchline provoked by the Treherbert hooker saw tempers boil over ,  but this was mainly Treherbert’s  frustrations coming out . Things settled and Wright came to the touchline with an ankle injury and Tom Hannah took over . Ten minutes later Tom Harrison , Rhys Price and Frazer McGann came on and all made significant contributions. Bater again showed his desire to score as a run by Harrison was taken on by Thomas in the centre  and his kick head was chased all the way to the line by Bater. With 5 minutes to go Treherbert’s prop made a run down the wing into the home 22 and Rhys Price covering back put the tackle in to stop him scoring .  With just two minutes left Treherbert’s flanker crossed the Cowbridge line after a series of drives for the line  to bring a final score of 33 – 8

The squad had done themselves proud. Congratulations to players and coaches.  The day was made even better with news that clear leaders Tylorstown were held to a draw by Canton who have had 3 great results with two wins and Saturday’ s draw in the last three. We have them in a few weeks. Each game from now on presents a real challenge and the standard cannot drop if we are to maintain a challenge for promotion.

On 24th March both teams are at home the 1st XV have Ferndale and the Youth have Cardiff University .  Kick offs at 2:30 and as usual al support would be a huge boost to the players .  After the game from 5:30 to 6:30pm Chris Kelly  ,  talented  singer and guitarist , will be at the club ,  so come on down .
