Cefn Coed 10 Cowbridge 26

Cowbridge 1sts travelled to bottom of the table Cefn Coed last Saturday, looking for an easier outing following two hard fought victories against Fairwater and Penygraig the previous two Saturdays. For much of the game the home team belied their lowly position and Cowbridge had to scrap for every point.Cefn missed an early opportunity to take the lead as a penalty went wide with Cowbridge counterattacking following a fine clearance by full back Josh Thomas and great chase by wing Tom Harrison.Centre Sam Stephens dislocated a finger at 15 minutes and was replaced by Hywel Williams. With captain Ross Gibbon and Dan Holder providing plenty of good lineout ball and the front row of Breed,Bater and Boxall more than holding their own Cowbridge had plenty of possession but basic errors meant a lot of attacking opportunities were breaking down.As half time loomed centre Tom James weaved his way through the home defence but again the ball went astray. Then with minutes to go a No. 10 Ioan Lewis took Cowbridge into the 22 with a ranging penalty kick.Hooker Craig Boxall drove for the line and from the ensuing scrum Dan Holder took the ball on and the supporting Connor Wyatt crashed over in the corner.

Half Time Cefn Coed 0 Cowbridge 5

The second half started perfectly for Cowbridge as a penalty took play to within 5 metres of the Cefn line and a clean take by Gibbon was transferred to the ever present Dan Holder to drive over with Josh Thomas expertly converting. The next fifteen minutes saw Cefn steal the initiative, compounded by some sloppy Cowbridge play and they deserved a try as their powerful centre burst through for a converted try followed soon after by a penalty.James Holder (brother of Dan) replaced the tireless Connor Wyatt.A great break by flying wing  Riddian Williams (brother of Hywel) seemed to inspire Cowbridge as Josh Thomas flew down the right wing, cut inside and transferred to the supporting Gareth Williams-Davies who sauntered over under the posts for Josh to convert. It was then veteran Dave Breed's turn to shine as he collected the ball from the kick off and charged up the pitch supported by Aaron Bowman and Ellis Reed who both had an excellent all round game.A penalty took Cowbridge into the 22 and despite the ball going to ground,Hywel Williams gathered and over he went for Cowbridge's fourth bonus point try, converted again by Thomas. To their credit Cefn didn't give and a powerful tackle from Craig Boxall prevented a certain try.A couple of barnstorming scrums from Cowbridge resulted in two takes against the head and in the final seconds Dan Holder drove out of the 22 and a Cowbridge penalty took us to the final whistle.

Final Score Cefn Coed 10 Cowbridge 26

Despite not firing on all cylinders, this was still a bonus point victory against a spirited Cefn Coed side and consolidated our position at the top of the table. With several players out injured this was a young Cowbridge team who did the club proud - well done boys
