Another bonus point victory

Last Saturday Cowbridge 1st XV entertained Ferndale at home ,  and as in the away fixture Ferndale showed they are a better team than their league position , with Cowbridge winning by 34- 17

Managing expectations after the result against Treherbert is never easy and there was a strong element of players trying a bit too hard to score from the off.  Ferndale had the first chance after a period of possession but the penalty went wide. Then 8 minutes in full back Tom Harrison cleverly let the ball go between his legs as if he had misfielded it, then dummied to pass in field before setting off on a run through the middle beating 4 defenders  before passing to supporting flanker Joe  Davies to cross the white wash with the conversion by centre Alex Guard . Ferndale got their first points from a penalty just a minute later and  then there   followed a fallow period before on 25 minutes a kick up field was run back by wing Tommy Reed , on to Harrison and then to Davies who just a foot from touch outstripped defenders to cross from 35 metres out .  The conversion fell just short. From the kick off there was great counter attacking started by wing Will Williams that ended with centre Luke Boys going over but the referee ruled the last pass forward .  But 5 minutes to half time scrum half Hywel Williams showed his awareness by bringing the ball to the blindside from a scrum and this time Boys did cross for an unconverted try.  There was great defence in the closing minutes of the half with second row jack Anderson and hooker Craig Boxall prominent and Joe Davies who capped a superb half with his share of tackles too . The scrum had gone very well . Half time 17-3

After only 5 minutes with tight hamstrings second row Ross Gibbon, who has been a great signing this year ,  came to the side and Dan Holder, much missed for a number of games due to his studies ,  came on.  A great break from well inside his own half by Alex Guard swept play up field  , Harrison in support took it on and slipped a pass to outside half Tom James and his show and go on the right touchline took him past defenders and a run to close to the posts. Guard added the extras .  Captain Howson also came to the side and Conor Boys , back in a green shirt after some time ,  took over.   At the mid point Ferndale were pressing with a series of attacks, Holder’s enthusiasm to prevent a try resulted in 10 minutes in the sin bin  .  Frazer McGhan and Rhys Price entered the fray for the last 20 . Another excellent try followed from a penalty scrum half Williams, James and Harrison ran out of defence , Guard cross kicked to opposite wing Reed . Moments later a penalty to Cowbridge in Ferndale’s 22 was taken quickly by Hywel Williams and then popped to No 8 Jamie Bennett to crash over.  Moving into the last 10 minutes Ferndale  came back with a try for their prop after a series of drives , but Cowbridge wanted the last word and live wires Williams and Joe Davies combined to give Davies his hat trick and a bonus point win at 34-17.

Ferndale had a good structure to their game and their centres and No 7 were amongst some of the best players faced this season . The bonus point win was vital as other results showed. Caerau Ely have now moved into 3rd positon but have played an extra game . Canton had another good win .  This Saturday we have another crucial game away at Tonyrefail . On 7th April we are again away this time at Ynysowen near Merthyr after that the last three games are at home.  The situation is both exciting and nerve wracking .  All support will be much appreciated as always
