The Friday before the NZ game Cowbridge 1st XV again ventured into The Rhondda for a frosty 7pm kick off against Treherbert. The enclosed pitch with 10' high fence and vocal supporters added to the occasion , the words Welcome to Hell on the wall to the stand gave a nice warm feeling to the night.
Treherbert known as The Devils were a much bigger outfit but the early scrums went in Cowbridge's favour however that didn't last long and the home team with lots of possession and a simple game plan, popping the recycled ball to forwards or backs to charge into Cowbridge and make ground.. The first score was a penalty to Treherbert that their outside half put over. The referee wasn't kind to Cowbridge and a string of penalties in favour of the home team in the last ten minutes of the half led to a kick to touch . A catch and drive from the lineout followed with a try and conversion. Half time 10-0
Exhorted by coaches Leigh Davies and Dan Williams to give even more and take any chances that came their way , Cowbridge defended everything that Treherbert threw at that them, including the verbals from the touchline. Five changes were made but each player took up where the starting player had left off. At the end the home side gripped by white line fever blew any number of chances as Cowbridge defended wave after wave of attacks until the referee cruelly awarded a home penalty with the last kick of the match to make the final score 13-0
It would our be wrong to single out any player for what was a great defensive team effort with possession in short supply.
Things don't get any easier as the team take on second placed Ynysowen on 9th December at home. Then Wattstown a week later again at home. The Youth are in action on 16th December also at home to Mountain Ash , all kick offs at 2:30pm.
Good luck Wales versus South Africa
Many thanks. RV/RK
