Big win on the Fred Dunn against Tonyrefial

Last Saturday Cowbridge 1st XV entertained Tonyrefail at home and with the sun on their backs produced a dazzling display of attacking rugby.

After only 5 minutes a heavy collision  between No 8  Jack Anderson and Tonyrefail's prop saw both on the floor receiving the cold sponge. Happily both played on and after 11 minutes a hit in the midfield by flanker Craig Boxall and centre Alex Guard dislodged the ball , scrum half Hywel Williams floated a long pass to full back Ben Wright who stepped inside one defender and around another to touch down, but his conversion was just short. 2 minutes later and wing Zac Summerhayes fielded a kick up field and then set off on an arcing run before straightening up and putting on the after burners over 35 metres then to prop Jon Bater and back inside to Williams to cross for a superb 65 metre try that Wright converted. Tonyrefail had a lot of possession in the next ten minutes but the defence held firm. From a great scrum inside  Cowbridge's  half , front row Danny John , hooker Rhys Price and Bater won the ball , Williams broke away and on to Wright for his second try.He also added the extras . Again the front row union were to the fore taking the ball against the head and then onto Guard who broke through the defence and popped it up to outside half Tom James to run in for a converted try. From the kick off wing Frazer McGhan set off on a 55 metre run but an excellent tackle brought him down . Just before half time James got his second after a quick tap penalty by Williams . Half time   33-0

Adam Dix came on at scrum half , Williams came to the wing and Summerhayes moved to centre with Tom Harrison after a fine half coming to the side lines.2 minutes in and Dix moved the ball left to flanker Jo Davies who darted between defenders , rounded the left wing to score a converted try.  A minute later great work by Anderson released Summerhayes to break the cover and pass to Williams to outstrip the defence for another converted try. From a maul second row Ross Gibbon, excellent in the lineout along with Sam Richards , showed his handling skills with a deft pass out of  a tackle to release flanker Davies for his second try. Wright added the extras . Davies was the first to get his hat trick after 11 minutes  after Dix moved the ball quickly from a penalty.Coach Leigh Davies entered the fray in the back row with Kieran David back after his broken thumb into the second row. At just past the mid point Leigh Davies  delivered a long pass to Ben Wright who put McGhan  away to score in the left hand corner. David took the ball from the kick off, the ball was moved infield and beautifully smooth acceleration by Summerhayes saw him cross the whitewash from 55 metres out. The Ton  chaser then flopped on him and Summerhayes reacted by throwing the ball and both saw yellow.  Wright added the extras. Ton's centre got their first try in the 29th minute down the right. Putting the conversion over too.  On 30 minutes Hywel Williams from his half went on a mazey run beating defender after defender before finally being brought down near Ton's 22m line. With 8 minutes to go Wright got a yellow for a deliberate knock down and in the final minutes Ton fought back with 2 more tries to bring a final score line of 71-19.

A superb display by the squad , strong set piece, and great running by forwards and backs. As a knowledgeable Ton supporter said after the game  with Ton losing the ball so often Cowbridge's counter attacking was too much for them to handle.  Player of Season is going to be a real headache this year, perhaps the whole squad should get it .

Having said how well the team played we cannot get ahead of ourselves . There are two home games to go and as we are seeing, each opposing team gets stronger towards the end of the season as teams fight for points.  So two more battles ahead the first against Wattstown on 28th April . It was great to see so many supporters last Saturday so it would be fantastic if that support was behind the team for these last crucial games.

The Youth were away at Rumney and despite putting up a great fight lost 17-5.
