Bonus Point Victory for Cowbridge

Bonus Point Victory for Cowbridge

Cowbridge travelled to Canton last Saturday looking to extend the lead at the top of the table. From the kick off both teams attempted to run the ball but early handling errors by both sides provided a disjointed first ten minutes. Then with twelve minutes on the clock a powerful run out of defence by Fraser McGhan, a drive up to the halfway by captain Richie Howsen and a break on the blind-side by scrum-half Hywel Williams released flanker Joe Davies on the touchline.Breaking through several tackles Joe finished with a sidestep to sprint under the posts for a superb try, converted by full back Ben Wright. With the Cowbridge scrum on top it seemed only a matter of time before the next try but it was Canton who threatened the Cowbridge line for an extended period but could not find a way through the blanket defence.

Half-Time Canton 0 Cowbridge 7

The second half mirrored the first for twenty minutes with a neat breaks by centres Ash Thomas and Tom Harrison the closest Cowbridge came to a score. With the Cowbridgescrum continuing to dominate,a couple of front row injuries for the home side resulted in passive scrums. Then a loose ball was cleverly kicked through by centre Thomas, kicked on again for Howson to pick up and touch down in the corner, expertly converted by Wright. This seemed to spur Cowbridge on and with the pack driving up the middle from the kick off with Joe Davies and Aaron Bowman at the helm, from a scrum on the halfway the ball was spun out to Harrison who burst through the Canton defence and outsprinted the full back on an arcing run to touch down for a fine try - his fourth of the season, followed by another excellent conversion by Wright. It was now Canton's turn to put the pressure but despite several scrums in the Cowbridge 22 were unable to convert the pressure into points. With the minutes ticking away Cowbridge were desperate for a fourth bonus point try. Some excellent kicking by No.10 Alex Guard took Cowbridge back into the Canton half.Cowbridge stole a lineout and hooker Craig Boxall and prop Jon Bater drove into the 22 only for the referee (who had a very good game) to award Canton a penalty.Time was running out when Tom Harrison received the ball from a scrum and again sliced through the defence and with ten metres to go passed to the supporting Richie Howson for his second try, again converted by Wright followed by the final whistle.

Final Score Canton 0 Cowbridge 28

Although not firing on all cylinders at times, Cowbridge scored four lovely tries to claim the bonus point and remain top of the table with a game in hand over second and third. The tackling was outstanding with some powerful play from the pack to lay the foundation for the victory.
This Saturday we are due to play Treherbert but it seems they will be unable to fulfill the fixture. The following Saturday we are away at Ferndale - probably an early kick-off as the Wales v Georgia kick-off is at 14.30.Then there is a break until 9th December when we are at home against Ynysowen.
A reminder that all the Autumn internationals will be on the big screen at the club
